Rivers & Trails Meeting Report for Friends of Philpott, Inc. August 13, 2009

A special “Thank You” goes out to trail building volunteers from Henry County Bike Club, Franklin Free-Wheelers, and SVMBA. Friend of Philpott is planning a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Jamison Mills Park Trail, on Saturday, September 26, 2009 @ 12:00 noon. Public officials have been invited. This is also National Public Land Day. The trail covers over 4 miles of loops and turns. In time the trail will connect to Horseshoe Point, Salthouse, and Ryans Branch. This would complete an 11 mile trail on the eastside of the lake.

Also on the evening of Friday, Sept. 25th there will be “free” camping at Jamison Mill Park at the upper primitive camping area (only) for those who plan to work Saturday morning as part of the National Pubic Land Day. Youth organizations are welcome as well as youths with parents/grandparents. Anyone planning to camp on Friday evening must register by Sept. 11th to receive free camping space. Contact Linda Drage at ldrage@comcast.net to get a copy of registration form. The work will consist the cleaning of the park trail and adding extra mulch around trees planted last year along Nicolas Creek, and any other work needed in the park. Friends will provide drinks for the volunteers working. A release form must be signed from the Corps of Engineers and a sign-up sheet must be signed for Friends for insurance purpose.

Also on Saturday, we will have a Pot Luck Lunch at 1:00 pm. Please bring a dish to share. Friends will provide drinks and paper goods. Trail volunteers members are welcome to attend.

On Sept. 14th @ 4:30 - 5:30 pm, Wayne Kirkpatrick and Linda Drage will be presenting the Boys & Girls Club a presentation on Water Monitoring and then on the 16th @ 4:30 - 5:30 pm, we will be meeting the kids at a local creek for some hands on experience. This will be a joint project with DRBA and Friends of Philpott.

Friends of Philpott will be having their next membership meeting on Tuesday, September 15th at the Visitors Assistance Center at Philpott Lake Park in Henry County. The public is welcome. We will be discussing our annual election being held on October 6th; Friends connection to the Marina plans; Bowens Creeks "Complete Assessable Park"; and other business.

Friends of Philpott is planning a yard sale on October 24 on Hwy 40 near Ferrum to help raise funds for future projects.
